How to learn CPQ
CPQ (configure, price, quote) is learned best by building: a small catalog, a few rules, a discount approval and a quote document. Learn the concepts first, then practice on real products. One 2026 change affects where you invest: Salesforce has stopped selling classic CPQ to new customers and is retiring its CPQ certification, so new learners should also learn Revenue Cloud.

Where to train in 2026
- Salesforce Revenue Cloud: Trailhead's current learning for Revenue Cloud Advanced is branded Agentforce Revenue Management. It has a Trailhead journey with fundamentals and configuration trails, and modules such as Product Catalog Management (catalogs, categories, attributes, bundles).
- Classic Salesforce CPQ: still worth learning if you'll support existing CPQ customers. Salesforce says CPQ is end of sale, not end of life, so existing orgs will need admins for years. Trailhead modules such as Advanced Approvals for Admins still cover it.
- Other platforms: start with the vendor's admin training and documentation.
- Real deals: ask sales for three recent quotes and rebuild them in a sandbox.
What to target
| Certification | Status (per Salesforce Help, Nov 2026) |
|---|---|
| Salesforce Certified CPQ Administrator | Retiring February 1, 2027. Last day to take the exam was August 31, 2026 |
| CPQ and Billing Consultant Accredited Professional | Retiring; Salesforce points to the Revenue Management Consultant exam |
| Salesforce Certified Industries CPQ Developer | Retiring; comparable Trailhead content (Industries CPQ Foundations) |
| Salesforce Certified Revenue Management Consultant | Current. Covers designing and implementing Revenue Cloud and the product-to-cash lifecycle |
If you're starting now, target the Revenue Management Consultant credential. Pair the official exam guide with hands-on sandbox work, and focus on why each feature exists.
Build a small catalog
Theory sticks when you build something. In a Salesforce developer or sandbox org with CPQ installed, model a small catalog you understand, for example a laptop bundle. Create a bundle product with features for processor, memory, storage and accessories. Add option constraints so a certain processor requires a minimum memory. Add a validation rule that blocks quotes without a warranty and a selection rule that adds a power adapter automatically. Then add a price rule that discounts accessories when more than three are selected.
Quote it several ways and break it on purpose: invalid combinations, large quantities, discounts above thresholds. Watching how the rules fire teaches more than reading about them. Write down each concept as you use it: bundles, features, options, product rules, price rules, summary variables, lookup tables and approvals.
What CPQ admins need
Many effective CPQ administrators come from sales operations or product management rather than development. Learning the business first and the tool second often produces simpler, more maintainable configurations.
| Skill | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Product and pricing knowledge | Rules are only as good as your understanding of the products |
| Data modeling | Attributes, lookup tables and product structure drive rules |
| Salesforce administration | Objects, fields, permissions, flows and page layouts |
| Testing discipline | Rules interact; changes need regression testing |
| Communication | Sales, product and finance teams all have requirements |
Common beginner errors
New CPQ admins often build too many rules, hard-code values that belong in lookup tables, and test only the happy path. Start simple, use tables for repeated logic, and test invalid combinations as carefully as valid ones.
The next layer
Visual CPQ adds 2D or 3D visualization to configuration so buyers see what they're choosing. It builds on the same concepts: attributes and rules drive what is shown. RenderDraw publishes a visual CPQ academy and provides 2D and 3D configurators that hand off to CPQ and Salesforce. Book a demo.
Show the product. Keep the rules and approvals intact.
RenderDraw adds guided, visual product configuration to Salesforce-centered quote workflows: buyers and reps make choices, rules explain conflicts, and a validated selection moves into pricing and the configured quote or proposal workflow.
- Guided configuration. Sections, controls and attributes arranged into a clear buying path.
- Rules with explanations. Invalid combinations are shown and held, not silently passed.
- Pricing handoff. A validated selection carries into the designated pricing system.
- Salesforce CPQ and Revenue Cloud. RenderDraw works alongside them as a visual layer.

Scope an evaluation
Bring one configurable product and its rules. Results depend on rule coverage, source-data quality and integration design.
RenderDraw does not publish accuracy percentages or time-saved claims. Test it on your own plan set.
Questions estimators ask.
How do I learn CPQ?
Learn products, attributes, rules, pricing, approvals and quote documents, then build a small real product in a sandbox and try to break it.
Should I still learn Salesforce CPQ?
Yes, if you'll support existing customers, since CPQ is end of sale but not end of life. For new implementations, learn Revenue Cloud Advanced.
Is there a Salesforce CPQ certification?
The CPQ Administrator certification retires on February 1, 2027, and the exam closed August 31, 2026. Salesforce points candidates to the Revenue Management Consultant certification.
Where can I learn Revenue Cloud?
On Trailhead, where the Revenue Cloud learning is currently branded Agentforce Revenue Management, including the Product Catalog Management module.
Do I need to be a developer?
No. Many effective CPQ admins come from sales operations or product management. Data modeling and testing discipline matter more than code for most configuration work.
