Outsource the estimate, or speed up your own?
Contractors hire cost estimating services when bid volume outruns their estimators. It works, but the takeoff leaves your hands, and addenda and questions go through someone else. AI-assisted takeoff is another route: your estimators keep control and spend less time counting.
- Services vs. software
- Who owns the quantities
- Addenda turnaround
- Free sample takeoff

Estimating service vs. in-house with AI.
| Outsourced estimating service | In-house + AI takeoff | |
|---|---|---|
| Who does the takeoff | The service's estimators | AI proposes; your estimator approves |
| Your knowledge of the job | Through their report | First-hand, with source evidence per row |
| Addenda | Back in their queue | Changed quantities return to your review |
| Pricing | Their pricing or your rates | Your assemblies, price lists and labor units |
| Cost model | Per bid or per hour | Software and your estimators' time |
Pick by situation.
Use a service when
You need a trade you do not usually bid, or a one-off spike in volume.
Use AI takeoff when
You bid steadily in your own trade and counting time is the bottleneck.
Use both when
A service covers overflow while your team standardizes on reviewed quantities.
What we checked (November 2026)
- Credentials to ask about:
- ASPE (American Society of Professional Estimators) offers the Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) designation.
- AACE International offers the Certified Cost Professional (CCP) and Certified Estimating Professional (CEP).
- In the UK, chartered quantity surveyors are RICS members.
- What to get in writing:
- the scope, sheets and spec sections covered
- exclusions
- how addenda are handled and priced
- turnaround
- the format of the deliverable
- whether you get source-linked markups or only a spreadsheet
- Rule of thumb: outsourced takeoff works for overflow and unfamiliar scopes. It works less well where your pricing depends on company-specific assemblies that the service doesn't know.
When a service doesn't fit: if your bid volume is steady and your assemblies are company-specific, you will usually spend as long correcting an outside takeoff as producing your own. Software with your estimator reviewing the output keeps that knowledge in-house. A service makes more sense for overflow, unfamiliar trades and one-off large bids.

Upload
Plan sets as legible PDFs are the most reliable starting point; confirm other file types in the free sample run.
Extract
AI proposes counts, lengths, areas and schedule data, with the source drawing on every row.
Review
Flagged items come lowest-confidence first. Confirm, edit or reject each one.
Configure and price
Approved quantities hand off to your assemblies, price lists and labor units for pricing.
Propose
Reviewed rows move on to your pricing and quote.
Run one bid side by side.
Pick a real job
Choose a recent bid with the plan set, legend, schedules and at least one addendum.
Build a baseline
Have an estimator check the quantities you want to test.
Run it side by side
Run the same set through your current tool and through a RenderDraw sample.
Score misses and review time
Record missed items, wrong inclusions and the time spent correcting each result.

Cost estimating services, answered.
What do cost estimating services do?
They prepare quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for contractors, usually per bid, using your drawings and either their pricing or your rates.
Is RenderDraw an estimating service?
No. RenderDraw is AI takeoff and estimating software with estimator review. Your team stays in control of the quantities and the price.
Are estimating services cheaper than software?
It depends on bid volume. Services can be cost-effective for occasional bids; steady volume in your own trade often favors in-house estimating with better tools.
Does the AI price the job by itself?
No. AI proposes quantities; your estimator reviews them, lowest confidence first, and only approved rows are priced with your assemblies, price lists and labor units.
Can I try it on my own drawings?
Yes. Request a free sample takeoff on one representative plan set. Your sample files remain private while we assess the request, and there is no obligation to proceed.
Send one plan set. Judge the result yourself.
A focused, no-obligation evaluation on your own drawings. Your sample files remain private while we assess the request.
- Upload one representative plan set (a legible PDF set is the most reliable starting point), plus an addendum if you have one.
- RenderDraw reviews the set and the scope you want tested.
- We follow up with what was extracted, what was flagged for review, and the most useful next step.
