Asphalt tonnage calculator for paving takeoffs

Asphalt is bought by the ton and taken off by the square yard. Enter each pavement area and lift thickness, and the calculator converts to compacted volume and tons, adds overrun, figures tack coat between lifts and applies your price per ton.

2 · Mix & cost

Tons = area × thickness × density ÷ 2,000. Compacted density varies with the mix; 145 lb/ft³ is a placeholder to replace with your mix design or supplier figure. Waste and tack rate are editable assumptions.

Reading pavement sections

Area by section, tons by lift

Civil drawings usually show pavement in several sections: heavy duty for drive lanes and truck routes, light duty for parking stalls, plus sidewalks and patches. Each section detail lists lifts (for example 2 in surface over 3 in base) over aggregate base. Take off area by section, then compute tons for each lift. Mixing sections into one area with an average thickness is the fastest way to be wrong on a paving bid.

  • Area. Square feet or square yards by section from the site plan hatching.
  • Lift thickness. From the pavement section detail, compacted.
  • Density. Compacted hot-mix asphalt is commonly estimated near 145 lb/ft³ (about 110 lb per square yard per inch). Your mix design or supplier may differ; the field is editable.
  • Overrun. Extra tonnage for base irregularities, edges and handwork.
  • Tack coat. Between lifts and on existing pavement, by application rate from the spec.
Patching and milling are separate items. Mill-and-overlay, full-depth patching and leveling courses each have their own production and price. Do not average them into new paving.

compacted volume (ft³) = area × thickness (in) ÷ 12 tons = volume × density (lb/ft³) ÷ 2000 × (1 + overrun) square yards = sq ft ÷ 9 tons per SY per inch ≈ 9 × density ÷ 12 ÷ 2000 (≈ 0.054 at 145 lb/ft³) tack (gal) = area (SY) × rate (gal/SY) × tacked surfaces

Values exclude overrun. Use your supplier's mix design density for final pricing.

Pricing the paving

Tons, trucks and production

Asphalt price is material per ton plus placing, which depends on paver production, haul distance and the trucks needed to keep the paver moving. Small areas, handwork and multiple mobilizations raise the cost per ton. Base aggregate, fine grading, striping and wheel stops are separate lines. Keep each pavement section as its own line so changes on an addendum are easy to re-price.

RenderDraw's AI takeoff reads site plans and pavement details, proposes areas by section with links to the sheet, and flags hatches it could not match to a section so your estimator decides.

Pricing

Paving price per SY and m²

Many owners and GCs compare paving bids by square yard or square metre. Enter an in-place price per ton and the calculator divides the total by the paved area to show cost per SY and per m², so you can compare a tonnage price against a unit-area price on the same job.

Area unit prices hide thickness. A 2 in lift and a 3 in lift on the same area differ by half again in tons, so state the compacted thickness and base course with any per-SY or per-m² price you quote.

What a paving estimate includes

  • Area by pavement section, from the site plan or a field measurement.
  • Compacted thickness of each lift and the mix specified.
  • Base course: aggregate depth and tons, and subgrade preparation.
  • Tack coat between lifts, saw cutting, striping and patching.
  • Mobilization, minimum tonnage charges and traffic control where they apply.
Where RenderDraw fits

Site quantities from the civil set, with the sheet attached.

RenderDraw's AI takeoff reads site and civil plans, proposes areas, lengths and counts, keeps each tied to its source, and sends uncertain items to estimator review.

  • Paving areas and curb lengths. Proposed from the site plan.
  • Utility runs and structures. Counted and measured with sources.
  • Addenda through the same review. Send the changed sheets back through takeoff and estimator review.
  • Your production and pricing. Applied only to reviewed rows.

FAQ

Questions estimators ask.

How do you calculate asphalt tonnage?

Multiply area by compacted thickness to get volume, multiply by density (about 145 lb/ft³ for typical hot mix) and divide by 2,000. 9,000 sq ft at 2 in is 1,500 ft³, about 108.75 tons.

How many tons of asphalt per square yard?

About 0.054 tons per square yard per inch at 145 lb/ft³, or roughly 110 lb per SY per inch.

How much overrun should I carry?

It depends on base conditions, edges and handwork. The calculator uses an editable percentage.

How do I estimate tack coat?

Multiply the area in square yards by the spec's application rate and the number of surfaces to be tacked.

Can RenderDraw take off paving areas?

Yes, RenderDraw's AI takeoff proposes paving areas by section from civil sets with sources and flags. Get a free sample takeoff.

How do I compare paving prices per square metre?

Use the cost per m² output: it divides total cost by paved area. Make sure every bid you compare uses the same thickness and base.

What should a paving estimate include?

Area by section, lift thickness, tons, base course, tack coat, saw cutting, striping, mobilization and exclusions.
