Shop drawings vs. design drawings for electrical contractors.
Design drawings from the engineer define what the electrical system must do and roughly where it goes. Shop drawings and submittals from the contractor and suppliers define exactly what will be installed. Estimates are built on the first; disputes are often settled with the second.

Design vs. shop.
| Design drawings | Shop drawings / submittals | |
|---|---|---|
| Produced by | Electrical engineer of record | Contractor, suppliers, manufacturers |
| Purpose | Design intent, code compliance, bidding | Exact products and installation details for approval |
| Typical content | Plans, one-lines, panel schedules, details, specs | Product data, switchgear drawings, coordinated layouts, fixture cut sheets |
| When | Before bid | After award, before installation |
| Estimating use | Basis of bid quantities | Reconcile changes; support change orders |

AI proposes quantities
Counts, lengths and areas come back with the source sheet and location attached to every row.
Estimator review
Low-confidence items surface first. Your estimator accepts, corrects or rejects each one.
Map to your assemblies
Approved quantities map to your items, assemblies and estimating assumptions.
Price reviewed rows
Labor units, material pricing and supplier quotes apply only to rows that passed review.
Hand off with evidence
Approved quantities move on to pricing and visual CPQ with the evidence trail still attached.

What we checked (November 2026)
- AIA A201-2017 §3.12:
- Shop drawings are prepared by the contractor, subcontractors, manufacturers or suppliers to illustrate part of the work (§3.12.1).
- They are not Contract Documents (§3.12.4).
- Work that requires a submittal must not start until the submittal is approved (§3.12.7).
- Deviations need written approval. Approval of a submittal does not relieve the contractor of responsibility for a deviation unless the contractor flagged that deviation in writing and the architect approved it (§3.12.8). If switchgear submittals change the bus rating or the bucket count from the design, call it out in writing and price it as a change. Don't assume the approval stamp covers it.
- Estimating gotcha: fixture substitutions on submittals can change the quantity of drivers, sensors or emergency battery packs, even when the fixture count stays the same.
The AI drafts. Your estimator decides.
Speed is easy to promise. Defensible numbers are the job, so RenderDraw keeps the estimator in control of every quantity that gets priced.
- Source on every row. Each quantity keeps its source sheet, location and reviewer decision.
- Lowest confidence first. The review queue shows the drawing tile with the detection highlighted and the extracted value.
- Uncertain items flagged, not hidden. Anything the AI can't confirm goes to the estimator rather than being guessed.
- Nothing priced before approval. Rows move on to pricing only after they are accepted.

Questions estimators ask
What are electrical shop drawings?
Contractor and supplier drawings and product data showing exactly what will be installed, submitted for review before fabrication or installation.
Should I estimate from shop drawings?
Bids are built from design drawings; shop drawings come after award. Use them to reconcile and price changes.
Why does traceability matter here?
When submittals reveal differences, a takeoff linked to the design sheets makes change pricing faster and defensible.
Does RenderDraw read submittals?
RenderDraw reads PDF drawing sets; it's built for bid takeoff from design documents.
Are shop drawings part of the contract?
Under AIA A201-2017 §3.12.4, shop drawings, product data and samples are not Contract Documents; they show how the contractor proposes to meet them. Approval of a submittal doesn't relieve the contractor of deviations from the Contract Documents unless the contractor specifically notified the architect of the deviation and the architect gave written approval (§3.12.8).
