Beam steel quantity calculation, member by member
List each beam or column with its shape, length and count. W, S, M, HP and C shapes read their weight per foot straight from the designation. Add a connection allowance, and the calculator totals pounds, tons and tonnes with a price per ton if you want one.
- Reads weight from W12X26-style names
- Connection allowance
- Pieces and LF
- Tons and tonnes
1 · Members Weight per foot from the shape tables
2 · Allowances & price
W, S, M, HP and C shape designations carry nominal weight per foot after the "X" (AISC Steel Construction Manual naming). For HSS, angles and plate, enter weight per foot from the AISC shape tables. Connection allowance and waste are editable assumptions; a real connection count beats a percentage.

Weight per foot × length × count
Structural steel is bought, fabricated and often priced by weight. For rolled shapes, the weight per foot is built into the name: a W12X26 weighs about 26 lb per foot. Multiply by the member length and the count, sum the members, and you have the base tonnage. Plates, connection material and bolts add weight that does not appear on a framing plan, which is why estimators carry a connection allowance until connections are detailed.
- Rolled shapes. W, S, M, HP and C shapes: the number after the X is nominal lb/ft per the AISC Steel Construction Manual. The calculator reads it from the shape name if you leave the weight blank.
- HSS and angles. The designation gives dimensions, not weight. Enter lb/ft from the AISC tables (for example HSS6X6X1/4 is about 19.02 lb/ft).
- Length. Center-to-center from the framing plan is a reasonable takeoff length; cut lengths are shorter by the connection setbacks.
- Connection allowance. A percentage covering plates, clips, stiffeners and bolts until connections are designed. Treat it as an assumption you document, not a standard.

Pieces, connections and erection
Tons drive material cost, but pieces drive shop and field labor. A job of many light beams takes more handling, cutting, drilling and picks per ton than a job of a few heavy girders. The calculator reports pieces and linear feet alongside tons for that reason. Carry both into your shop and erection pricing.
Building the member list is the slow part of a steel estimate. RenderDraw's AI takeoff reads framing plans and schedules, proposes members with sizes, lengths and counts linked to their sheet, and holds anything it could not read for an estimator to resolve.
Member counts off the drawings, with the sheet attached.
RenderDraw's AI takeoff proposes steel member counts and lengths from plans, framing plans and schedules, links every row to its source, and sends low-confidence items to your estimator before the handoff to pricing.
- Counts and lengths by member. Proposed from the drawings and kept tied to the framing plan or schedule they came from.
- Uncertain items flagged. Items the AI can't confirm go to review instead of being guessed.
- Addenda through the same review. Send the changed sheets through takeoff and review, then reprice the members that changed.
- Your estimator decides. Connections, erection, coatings, risk and margin stay your call.

Test it on a real steel package
Send one structural set, ideally with an addendum. Sample files stay private while RenderDraw assesses the request. No obligation.
RenderDraw does not publish accuracy percentages or time-saved claims. Test it on your own plan set.
Questions estimators ask.
How do you calculate steel beam quantity?
Multiply the weight per foot by the length and the count for each member, then sum. For W shapes the weight per foot is the number after the X. Add a connection allowance for plates and bolts.
How much does a W12X26 beam weigh?
About 26 lb per foot. A 30 ft W12X26 weighs about 780 lb.
What connection allowance should I use?
It varies by framing type and connection design. The field is an editable assumption. Once connections are detailed, replace it with actual connection weights.
How do I convert pounds to tons?
Divide by 2,000 for US short tons. Multiply pounds by 0.000453592 for metric tonnes.
Can RenderDraw create the member list from drawings?
RenderDraw's AI takeoff proposes members, sizes, lengths and counts from your plan set with sources and flags. Request a free sample takeoff.

Send a steel package. RenderDraw proposes members, sizes, lengths and counts from framing plans with their source sheet and flags what it could not confirm.
- Upload the plans, specs and schedules, plus an addendum if you have one.
- RenderDraw reviews the set and the scope you want tested.
- We follow up with extracted quantities, flagged items and next steps.
