Drywall material calculator: board, mud, tape & screws
Enter wall runs and ceilings, pick the sheet size and compound, and get a full material list: sheets to order, joint compound, tape, screws, primer and texture. Finishing rates follow USG's published per-1,000 sq ft figures.
- Sheets with waste
- Mud by gallon or pound
- Tape and screws
- Primer and texture
1 · Walls Length × height × faces
2 · Ceilings & deductions
3 · Board & finishing
Tape, compound, screws and primer rates: USG Sheetrock Installation & Finishing Guide (J371) (per 1,000 sq ft; screws at 12 in o.c. ceilings, 16 in o.c. walls; primer at 400 sq ft/gal). Ready-mixed by weight: 138 lb per 1,000 sq ft from the USG/CGC Gypsum Construction Handbook. Finishing quantities use the face layer only. Waste and texture coverage are editable.

Measure by face, not by wall
Drywall is bought by the sheet and installed by the face. A partition with board on both sides counts twice. A rated wall with two layers each side counts four times. The calculator lets you enter each run with its faces, applies layers, deducts large openings, adds ceilings, and divides by the sheet size with waste. Keep separate runs for each partition type so the material list maps to the partition schedule.
- Faces. One side for exterior walls and shafts lined from one side; two for interior partitions.
- Layers. Rated assemblies often call for two layers; the finishing materials only apply to the face layer.
- Openings. Deduct doors and large windows. Small openings are usually not deducted, because the board is cut out of full sheets anyway.
- Sheet size. Longer sheets mean fewer butt joints and less finishing. Pick the size you will actually buy and stock.
USG rates per 1,000 sq ft
| Material | Rate per 1,000 sq ft | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Joint tape | 370 LF | USG J371 |
| All Purpose compound | 10 gal | USG J371 |
| Plus 3 lightweight | 9 gal | USG J371 |
| Ready-mixed (weight) | 138 lb | USG Gypsum Construction Handbook |
| Type W screws | 2.7 lb | USG J371 |
| Drywall primer | 400 sq ft per gal | USG J371 |
Rates are manufacturer guidance for typical framing and finishing. Level 5 finishes, heavy texture and patch work use more. Waste is editable.
Material is the easy half
Hanging and finishing labor usually exceeds material cost on commercial drywall, and it varies with ceiling heights, the number of corners and soffits, the finish level in the spec and the amount of rated work. Carry hanging by square foot of board and finishing by square foot of face, adjusted by finish level. If you price per square foot, build the unit cost from the material list above plus your crew rates; that keeps the number explainable.
The input that takes the longest on a fit-out job is measuring every partition run by type. RenderDraw's AI takeoff proposes those lengths from the plans and partition schedule with the source sheet attached, so your estimator checks the takeoff rather than redrawing it.
The drywall estimating formula
Ceilings are usually hung first and often in a different board (for example, sag-resistant ceiling board), so keep walls and ceilings as separate lines. Add rows for each, and the calculator totals sheets, mud, tape and screws for both.
For a whole house, take off room by room or floor by floor, then compare the total against a quick check of gross floor area times a typical ratio from your own past jobs.
Wall lengths, ceiling areas and door counts, traceable.
RenderDraw's AI takeoff proposes partition lengths, ceiling areas and opening counts from plans, wall types and RCPs, each tied to its source, then routes uncertain items to estimator review.
- Partition lengths by wall type. Linked to the plan and the wall-type legend.
- Ceiling areas from the RCP. Kept by room and ceiling type.
- Doors and openings counted. For deductions, frames and headers.
- Estimator approval. Heights, waste, labor and margin stay with you.

Questions estimators ask.
How many sheets of drywall do I need for a room?
Add the wall area (perimeter × height) and ceiling area, subtract large openings, add waste, and divide by the sheet area: 32 sq ft for 4 × 8, 48 sq ft for 4 × 12.
How much joint compound do I need?
USG's guidance is about 10 gallons of All Purpose ready-mixed per 1,000 sq ft of finished surface, or about 9 gallons of the lightweight Plus 3 compound.
How much drywall tape per square foot?
About 370 LF of tape per 1,000 sq ft of finished surface, per USG.
How many drywall screws per sheet?
USG puts screws at about 2.7 lb per 1,000 sq ft of board for typical spacing. Count per sheet varies with framing spacing and the fastening schedule.
Can RenderDraw do a drywall takeoff?
RenderDraw's AI takeoff proposes partition lengths, ceilings and openings from plans with sources and flags for review. Get a free sample takeoff.
How do I calculate drywall for walls and ceilings?
Calculate wall area (perimeter × height minus openings) and ceiling area (length × width) separately, then divide each by the sheet area and add waste.
What is the formula for estimating drywall in a house?
Sum wall and ceiling areas room by room, divide by sheet area, add waste, then apply per-1,000 sq ft rates for mud, tape and screws.
