Metal building cost calculator, built on your quotes

Geometry first, then rates. Enter width, length, eave height and roof pitch to get floor, roof and wall areas including gables. Then add your package, erection, foundation and insulation rates and doors to see total cost and cost per square foot.

  • Roof area with pitch
  • Walls incl. gables
  • Your package and erection rates
  • Cost per square foot

3 · Openings

Geometry is standard for a gable building. The dollar rates on load are example inputs to show the math, not market prices: metal building pricing moves with steel, region, design loads and accessories. Replace them with your supplier and erector quotes.

Why the rates are examples

Prices move; geometry does not

Metal building prices depend on steel prices, region, design loads, collateral loads, crane loads, accessories and the manufacturer. A calculator that shows a national "per square foot" number would be guessing. This one does the reliable part, the geometry, and loads example rates only to show the math. Replace them with yours: your manufacturer's package quote, your erector's price, your foundation subcontractor. Enter them per square foot of floor, and the total updates live.

  • Roof area. Floor area × slope factor √(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²). At 1:12, the factor is about 1.0035.
  • Walls. Perimeter × eave height, plus two gable triangles of ½ × width × ridge rise.
  • Insulation. Priced over roof plus wall area.
  • Openings. Overhead doors and walk doors as counts with your prices.
Read the loads. Wind, snow, seismic, collateral and crane loads on the drawings change the frame weight and package price. Send them to the manufacturer with the dimensions.

Package, erection and the rest

A pre-engineered metal building bid usually combines a manufacturer's package (frames, secondary framing, sheeting, trim, fasteners and accessories), erection, foundations designed for the frame reactions, and site and interior work. The manufacturer's anchor bolt plan and reactions drive the foundation, so get them early. Openings, framed openings, canopies, liner panels and insulation systems are common gaps between a quick budget and a real number.

RenderDraw's AI takeoff helps with the quantities from drawings: building dimensions, openings and accessories, with each value linked to the sheet so you can confirm it before you apply your rates.

Where RenderDraw fits

Member counts off the drawings, with the sheet attached.

RenderDraw's AI takeoff proposes steel member counts and lengths from plans, framing plans and schedules, links every row to its source, and sends low-confidence items to your estimator before the handoff to pricing.

  • Counts and lengths by member. Proposed from the drawings and kept tied to the framing plan or schedule they came from.
  • Uncertain items flagged. Items the AI can't confirm go to review instead of being guessed.
  • Addenda through the same review. Send the changed sheets through takeoff and review, then reprice the members that changed.
  • Your estimator decides. Connections, erection, coatings, risk and margin stay your call.

FAQ

Questions estimators ask.

How do you estimate a metal building?

Calculate floor, roof and wall areas from the dimensions, get a package quote from the manufacturer with the design loads, add erection, foundations, insulation, doors and accessories, and apply your overhead and profit.

How do I calculate the roof area of a metal building?

Multiply the floor area by the slope factor √(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²). A 60 × 100 ft building at 1:12 has about 6,021 sq ft of roof.

Are the default rates real metal building prices?

The rates on load are examples, not market prices. Prices vary by region, loads, steel market and accessories, so enter your quotes to get a reliable cost per square foot.

How do I calculate gable wall area?

Each gable is a triangle of ½ × width × ridge rise. The rise is width ÷ 2 × pitch ÷ 12.

Can RenderDraw help estimate metal buildings?

RenderDraw's AI takeoff proposes quantities from drawings for estimator review, and approved quantities hand off to pricing and visual CPQ. Get a free sample takeoff.
