Guided selling in Salesforce CPQ
Guided selling asks a rep or buyer a few questions and narrows the catalog to products that fit. In Salesforce CPQ it's built from quote processes and process inputs. In Revenue Cloud Advanced, Salesforce's successor to CPQ, it's Guided Product Selection. Both filter well; complex configurable products usually need more.

First, which Salesforce product are you on?
Salesforce CPQ (the managed package that started as SteelBrick) is end of sale, not end of life. In July 2026 Salesforce said it no longer sells new CPQ licenses to new customers. Existing customers can keep using it, renew, add users and get support, but new feature work goes into Revenue Cloud Advanced (RCA), formerly Revenue Lifecycle Management. There's no forced migration and no announced end-of-life date.
So guided selling now means one of two setups:
| Salesforce CPQ | Revenue Cloud Advanced | |
|---|---|---|
| Who has it | Existing CPQ customers | New customers and those migrating |
| Guided selling feature | Quote Process + Process Inputs | Guided Product Selection (Product Discovery) |
| Matching | Process inputs mapped to product fields (mirror fields) | Assessment questions mapped to product attributes |
| Validation after selection | Product rules, option constraints | Constraint-based configuration rules |
Guided selling in Salesforce CPQ
- Define the questions. What does a rep need to know to pick the right product?
- Add product fields that hold the answer each product fits, usually picklists.
- Create mirror fields on the Process Input object with the same API name, and add that API name to the Input Field and Product Field picklists.
- Create the Quote Process with a Process Input record per question, in the order a rep would think about them. Add Process Input Conditions for questions that depend on earlier answers.
- Assign it as the default in CPQ package settings, or per quote by segment.
- Test with real deals. Do the filtered lists make sense? Does every valid combination return at least one product?
Worked example
A manufacturer sells three families of air compressors. A rep should answer three questions (application, required air flow, power supply) and see only matching products. That's a Quote Process with three Process Inputs mapped to product fields such as Application, CFM Range and Voltage. The answers filter the catalog when the rep clicks Add Products in the Quote Line Editor.
The most common problem is data, not setup. If product records have missing or inconsistent attribute values, the filter hides products that should appear. Clean the attributes before launch and assign an owner to keep them current.
Guided selling in Revenue Cloud Advanced
In RCA, guided selling is Guided Product Selection, enabled in Product Discovery settings. The setup, per Salesforce's documentation:
- Enable indexed product search and build the product index.
- Enable guided selling.
- Create assessment questions mapped to product attributes.
- Build a guided selling form; the standard flow uses an OmniScript.
- Users start it with Guide Me while browsing catalogs. It's also exposed as an API for portals and other channels.
RCA's catalog is attribute-based and its configurator is constraint-based, so plan how CPQ questions, product fields and rules translate if you're migrating. Salesforce puts typical migrations at three to six months, longer with heavy custom logic.
Where guided selling falls short
- Filtering isn't configuring. Guided selling narrows a list; it doesn't build a valid configuration of options and dimensions.
- Text-only choices. Buyers often can't judge options without seeing them.
- Rules live elsewhere. Product rules (CPQ) or constraint rules (RCA) still decide what's valid.
- Maintenance. Every new product needs its attributes kept current.
Two meanings of "guided selling"
Sales engagement platforms, such as Revenue.io, use "guided selling" for real-time coaching and next-step prompts during calls. That's different from CPQ guided selling, which helps pick and configure products. Many teams use both.
Keeping guided selling useful
Review the questions with sales every quarter. If reps skip guided selling and search by name instead, the questions probably aren't the ones customers ask. Track which products are added through guided selling versus search. For complex configured products, guided selling picks the starting product, and bundle rules, constraint rules or a visual configurator take over from there.
Where RenderDraw fits
For configurable products, a visual configurator that enforces rules as buyers choose is the step after filtering. RenderDraw adds guided, visual product configuration to Salesforce-centered quote workflows. Buyers and reps make choices, rules explain conflicts, and a validated selection moves into pricing and the quote. It works alongside Salesforce CPQ or Revenue Cloud as a visual layer.
Show the product. Keep the rules and approvals intact.
RenderDraw adds guided, visual product configuration to Salesforce-centered quote workflows: buyers and reps make choices, rules explain conflicts, and a validated selection moves into pricing and the configured quote or proposal workflow.
- Guided configuration. Sections, controls and attributes arranged into a clear buying path.
- Rules with explanations. Invalid combinations are shown and held, not silently passed.
- Pricing handoff. A validated selection carries into the designated pricing system.
- Salesforce CPQ and Revenue Cloud. RenderDraw works alongside them as a visual layer.

Scope an evaluation
Bring one configurable product and its rules. Results depend on rule coverage, source-data quality and integration design.

Questions estimators ask.
What is guided selling in Salesforce CPQ?
A quote process with process inputs. Each input is a question shown to the rep when adding products, and the answers filter the product list by matching product fields.
How do I set up guided selling in Salesforce CPQ?
Create product fields that hold the attributes you want to filter on, create matching mirror fields with the same API name on the Process Input object, create a Quote Process with a Process Input per question, optionally add Process Input Conditions for dependent questions, and assign the quote process.
Is Salesforce CPQ still sold?
Salesforce CPQ is end of sale but not end of life. Salesforce no longer sells new CPQ licenses to new customers, while existing customers can renew, add users and get support. New development goes into Revenue Cloud Advanced.
Does Revenue Cloud have guided selling?
Yes. Revenue Cloud Advanced offers Guided Product Selection through its Product Discovery settings. Admins create assessment questions mapped to product attributes and a guided selling form, and users start it with Guide Me in the catalog. Check current Salesforce documentation for your release.
What are the limits of guided selling?
It filters products but doesn't build valid configurations of options and dimensions, and it's text-only. Product rules or constraint rules still decide what's valid, and the attribute data needs constant upkeep.
Is Revenue.io guided selling the same thing?
No. Sales engagement platforms such as Revenue.io use "guided selling" for call coaching and next-step prompts. CPQ guided selling is about product selection.
Can guided selling filter on more than one product field?
Yes. Each process input maps to a field, and the answers combine to filter the product list.
Does guided selling replace product rules?
No. Guided selling helps choose products. Product rules in CPQ, or constraint rules in Revenue Cloud Advanced, validate and adjust configurations.
