Trade estimating

Terrazzo is areas, strips and patterns.

Terrazzo estimates depend on more than square feet: each color field, linear feet of divider strip, base, stair treads and risers. RenderDraw proposes areas and linear quantities from finish plans and details, with the source on every row.

  • Areas by color field
  • Divider strips (LF)
  • Base & stairs
  • Pattern details

What gets taken off

Terrazzo quantities, field by field.

01

Floor areas

By color field and system (epoxy or cementitious).

02

Divider strips

Linear feet by type.

03

Base

Cove or flat base by type.

04

Stairs

Treads, risers and landings.

Fact check

What we checked (November 2026)

  • What to measure:
    • Area by color field and system (epoxy thin-set vs. cementitious).
    • Divider strips as linear feet by material (zinc, brass, white-metal alloy) and height. Control-joint strips go wherever the slab has joints.
    • Base as linear feet by type.
    • Stairs as counts of treads, risers and landings.
  • Joint placement: divider and control strips should line up with slab control and construction joints. Check the structural sheets as well as the finish plan.
  • Spec reference: CSI MasterFormat Section 09 66 00 (Terrazzo Flooring) and its subsections. The specification usually cites the National Terrazzo & Mosaic Association's guidelines.
Worked example (illustrative)
Lobby 60 x 40 ft = 2,400 SF; pattern grid 5 ft each way divider strip = (60/5 - 1) x 40 + (40/5 - 1) x 60 = 11 x 40 + 7 x 60 = 860 LF, plus perimeter and color-field borders

Terrazzo takeoff checklist

  1. Area by system and color, from the finish plan and legend.
  2. Divider strips by material and height, from the pattern plan.
  3. Control-joint strips at slab joints (check the structural plans).
  4. Base: LF by type (cove or flush) and height.
  5. Stairs: tread, riser and landing counts, plus abrasive nosings if specified.
  6. Logos and medallions as separate items with their own shop drawings.
  7. Substrate prep and moisture testing, if they are in your scope.

When the area method doesn't apply: on precast terrazzo (stair treads, base, wall panels), price each piece from the shop drawings. Don't price it as square feet of poured floor.

How RenderDraw works

AI-powered, human-approved.

Upload

Plan sets as legible PDFs are the most reliable starting point; confirm other file types in the free sample run.

Extract

AI proposes counts, lengths, areas and schedule data, with the source drawing on every row.

Review

Flagged items come lowest-confidence first. Confirm, edit or reject each one.

Configure and price

Approved quantities hand off to your assemblies, price lists and labor units for pricing.

Propose

Reviewed rows move on to your pricing and quote.

Evaluate on your drawings

Run one bid side by side.

Pick a real job

Choose a recent bid with the plan set, legend, schedules and at least one addendum.

Build a baseline

Have an estimator check the quantities you want to test.

Run it side by side

Run the same set through your current tool and through a RenderDraw sample.

Score misses and review time

Record missed items, wrong inclusions and the time spent correcting each result.

FAQ

Terrazzo takeoff software, answered.

How do you estimate terrazzo?

Take off areas by color field and system, linear feet of divider strips and base, stair components, then price material, labor and grinding/finishing.

Can AI take off terrazzo patterns?

AI can propose areas and lines from finish plans and details. Complex patterns should be reviewed carefully.

What drives terrazzo cost?

System type, number of colors, divider strip density, and stair and base work.

Does the AI decide the price?

No. It proposes quantities with sources; your estimator approves them before your assemblies, price lists and labor units are applied.

Can I test it on my drawings?

Yes. Send one representative plan set for a free sample takeoff. Your files remain private while we assess the request, and there is no obligation to proceed.

Are divider strips counted in linear feet?

Yes. Take divider and control-joint strips off as linear feet by material and height, separately from the floor area.

Start small

Send one plan set. Judge the result yourself.

A focused, no-obligation evaluation on your own drawings. Your sample files remain private while we assess the request.

  1. Upload one representative plan set (a legible PDF set is the most reliable starting point), plus an addendum if you have one.
  2. RenderDraw reviews the set and the scope you want tested.
  3. We follow up with what was extracted, what was flagged for review, and the most useful next step.
