Galvanizing cost per ton, from your galvanizer's quote
Galvanizers price by weight, but freight, minimums and touch-up change what a ton really costs you. Enter tonnage, price per pound, minimum lot charge, truck trips and handling, and get the true cost per ton to carry in your bid.

2 · Rates (example inputs, not market prices: use your galvanizer quote)
Galvanizers typically price by weight with lot minimums. The rates on load are example inputs, not market prices; real rates, freight and handling vary by plant, region, zinc market and piece type. Use a written quote.

Weight is only the start
Hot-dip galvanizing is normally quoted by the pound of black steel, sometimes with different rates for structural, light fabrications and small parts. The rate you see is not the rate you pay per ton of steel once you add freight to and from the plant, lot minimums on small orders, handling, and touch-up and inspection afterward. The calculator builds a cost per ton you can defend line by line.
- Which pieces. Specs often require galvanizing for exterior and exposed steel, lintels, embeds and site metals but not interior framing. Set the percentage of tonnage galvanized.
- Price per pound. From your galvanizer's written quote for the piece type.
- Minimums. Small lots often trigger a minimum charge. The calculator applies the larger of weight × rate and the minimum.
- Freight. Round trips to the plant. Long or oversized pieces may need special trucks.
- Handling and touch-up. Venting, unloading, sorting, cleanup and field touch-up of damaged areas, as a per-ton allowance.
Cost per ton
| Item | Where to get it |
|---|---|
| Price per pound | Galvanizer's written quote |
| Minimum lot charge | Galvanizer's terms |
| Kettle size | Galvanizer (affects long pieces) |
| Freight | Your trucking or the galvanizer's |
| Coating requirement | Spec section (commonly ASTM A123 or A153) |

Carry it separately
Keep galvanizing as its own line rather than folding it into a fabricated price per ton. The tonnage that gets galvanized is often a fraction of the job and concentrated in miscellaneous metals, which have more pieces per ton and more handling. A separate line also makes it easy to price an alternate if the owner asks for paint instead.
The tonnage side comes from your takeoff. RenderDraw's AI takeoff proposes structural and miscellaneous metals quantities from the drawings with their sources, so you can tag the pieces that need galvanizing and price them accurately.
Member counts off the drawings, with the sheet attached.
RenderDraw's AI takeoff proposes steel member counts and lengths from plans, framing plans and schedules, links every row to its source, and sends low-confidence items to your estimator before the handoff to pricing.
- Counts and lengths by member. Proposed from the drawings and kept tied to the framing plan or schedule they came from.
- Uncertain items flagged. Items the AI can't confirm go to review instead of being guessed.
- Addenda through the same review. Send the changed sheets through takeoff and review, then reprice the members that changed.
- Your estimator decides. Connections, erection, coatings, risk and margin stay your call.

Test it on a real steel package
Send one structural set, ideally with an addendum. Sample files stay private while RenderDraw assesses the request. No obligation.
RenderDraw does not publish accuracy percentages or time-saved claims. Test it on your own plan set.
Questions estimators ask.
How is galvanizing priced?
Usually by the pound of black steel, with possible minimums and different rates for piece types. Freight, handling and touch-up are added separately.
How do I convert a galvanizing price per pound to per ton?
Multiply by 2,000. At $0.50 per pound, the kettle charge is $1,000 per ton before freight and handling.
Why is my cost per ton higher than the galvanizer's rate?
Freight, minimum lot charges and handling spread over a small tonnage raise the effective cost per ton. The calculator shows the effect.
Which steel needs galvanizing?
The specification decides. Exterior, exposed and corrosive-environment steel commonly does. Read the finish requirements in the steel and miscellaneous metals sections.
Can RenderDraw help with the steel takeoff?
Yes. RenderDraw's AI takeoff proposes steel quantities from drawings with sources and review flags. Get a free sample takeoff.
Know which pieces get galvanized before you price them.
Send a steel package. RenderDraw proposes member and miscellaneous metals quantities with their sources, so finish requirements land on the right pieces.
- Upload the plans, specs and schedules, plus an addendum if you have one.
- RenderDraw reviews the set and the scope you want tested.
