Addendum, amendment or appendix? Timing decides.

In construction, an addendum (plural: addenda) changes bid documents before bids are due; an amendment changes a contract after it's signed; an appendix is attached supporting material. For estimators, addenda are the ones that change quantities on bid week.

Handling addenda without starting over.

  • Acknowledge every addendum on the bid form.
  • List changed sheets and spec sections.
  • Compare revisions and reprice only what moved.
  • Update your document list in the proposal.
How it works

From plan set to reviewed quantities.

AI-powered, human-approved. Each stage records what ran, what changed and who approved it.

Start with your bid package

Drawings, specs and addenda together: the plan set, legends and schedules, the spec sections for your scope and any addenda.

AI proposes quantities

Counts, lengths and areas come back with the source sheet and location attached to every row.

Estimator review

Low-confidence items surface first. Your estimator accepts, corrects or rejects each one.

Map to your assemblies

Approved quantities map to your items, assemblies and estimating assumptions.

Price reviewed rows

Labor units, material pricing and supplier quotes apply only to rows that passed review.

Hand off with evidence

Approved quantities move on to pricing and visual CPQ with the evidence trail still attached.

Fact check

What we checked (November 2026)

  • Words differ by market. In private work, pre-bid changes are usually called addenda. In federal sealed bidding, the same pre-bid changes are called amendments:
    • FAR 14.208 has them issued on SF 30 ("Amendment of Solicitation/Modification of Contract") before bid opening, sent to everyone who received the invitation.
    • After award, contract changes are modifications (FAR Part 43).
  • Acknowledgment is mandatory. FAR 52.214-3 lists the ways to acknowledge an amendment: signing it, noting its number and date on the bid form, by letter, or by fax or email if those bids are authorized. The acknowledgment must arrive by the bid time.
  • A pre-bid conference is not an amendment. FAR 14.208(a) says a change mentioned at a pre-bid conference still has to be issued as an amendment. Don't price verbal changes as if they were issued.
  • The federal FAR is being rewritten (the "FAR Overhaul"). Check the current text on acquisition.gov before you rely on a clause number.
Worked example (illustrative)

Addendum 2 revises sheets E-201 and E-202 and spec section 26 51 00, two days before bids are due.

  1. Log the addendum number and date.
  2. Replace the two sheets in the set and re-run the takeoff for those sheets only.
  3. Compare the fixture counts by type against Addendum 1.
  4. Reprice only the lines that changed.
  5. Acknowledge Addendum 2 on the bid form and list it in your proposal's document list.
Human review, by design

The AI drafts. Your estimator decides.

Speed is easy to promise. Defensible numbers are the job, so RenderDraw keeps the estimator in control of every quantity that gets priced.

  • Source on every row. Each quantity keeps its source sheet, location and reviewer decision.
  • Lowest confidence first. The review queue shows the drawing tile with the detection highlighted and the extracted value.
  • Uncertain items flagged, not hidden. Anything the AI can't confirm goes to the estimator rather than being guessed.
  • Nothing priced before approval. Rows move on to pricing only after they are accepted.

FAQ

Questions estimators ask

What is the difference between an addendum and an amendment?

Addenda change bid documents before award; amendments change a signed contract.

Addendum vs addenda?

Addenda is the plural of addendum.

Addendum vs appendix?

An appendix attaches information; an addendum changes the documents.

How does RenderDraw handle addenda?

When an addendum lands, the changed sheets can go back through the same AI takeoff and estimator review, and every proposed quantity keeps its source sheet so you can find what moved. Your estimator still confirms the addendum list and the acknowledgment on the bid form.

In federal bids, is it an addendum or an amendment?

Federal sealed bidding uses "amendment" for pre-bid changes. FAR 14.208 requires changes to an invitation for bids to be issued on Standard Form 30 before bid opening, and FAR 52.214-3 requires bidders to acknowledge each amendment by the time and place set for receipt of bids. Contract changes after award are called modifications (FAR Part 43).

What happens if I forget to acknowledge an addendum?

The bid can be rejected as nonresponsive. Under FAR 14.405 a contracting officer may treat it as a minor informality only if the bid clearly shows the amendment was received or the amendment has no more than a negligible effect on price, quantity, quality or delivery. Private owners set their own rules in the instructions to bidders.
