Construction estimating abbreviations

Estimates and drawings are full of abbreviations, and a wrong unit is one of the easiest ways to blow a number. This reference covers the units, drawing abbreviations and contract terms estimators use most, the ones that mean different things in different trades, and the conversions behind them.

The project legend governs. Abbreviations vary by firm and discipline. Always check the abbreviation list on the general sheets; when a project uses a term differently from common usage, the project's definition wins. Many firms base their lists on the U.S. National CAD Standard.

Ambiguous abbreviations to watch

  • MH: man-hour in an estimate; manhole on a civil sheet.
  • C: conduit, cold, ceiling or centerline, depending on the set.
  • EQ: equal (dimensions) or equipment.
  • FD: floor drain on plumbing sheets; fire damper on mechanical sheets.
  • CB: catch basin (civil) or circuit breaker (electrical).
  • T: ton, thermostat, or tread.
  • PF: plumbing fixture, per foot, or power factor.

When the meaning is unclear, send an RFI rather than guessing.

Board feet are calculated on nominal dimensions in common U.S. practice; check how your supplier prices.

Abbreviations in proposals

In proposals and scope letters, write units the way the customer uses them. Owners may not know SFCA or MBF, and GCs outside your trade may not know your fixture shorthand. Spell a term out once, followed by the abbreviation. Label the unit on every estimate row; many costly errors are SF priced as SY or LF priced as each.

Where RenderDraw fits

RenderDraw's AI takeoff reads legends and schedules and proposes quantities with their units and sheet sources for estimator review. Try a free sample takeoff, or see the takeoff measurement types guide.

Where RenderDraw fits

Spend your hours on scope and price, not re-counting.

RenderDraw's AI takeoff reads drawings, schedules and specs, proposes quantities with the source sheet attached, and holds uncertain items for estimator review before anything is priced.

  • Source on every quantity. Each count, length and area keeps its source sheet and location.
  • Lowest confidence first. The review queue puts the items most likely to be wrong at the top.
  • Addenda through the same review. Send the changed sheets through takeoff and estimator review, then reprice what moved.
  • Approval before pricing. Nothing moves on to pricing until an estimator accepts it.

FAQ

Questions estimators ask.

What does SFCA mean?

Square feet of contact area, the unit for concrete formwork: the area of form in contact with concrete.

What is a roofing square?

100 square feet of roof surface.

What does MH mean on drawings?

It depends on the sheet: man-hour in estimates, manhole on civil drawings. The project legend governs.

How do you convert square feet to cubic yards?

Multiply SF by thickness in inches, divide by 12, then by 27. A 2,000 SF slab at 4 in. is about 24.7 CY.

What is OFCI?

Owner furnished, contractor installed: the owner buys the item and you install it, so price labor and handling but not material.
